Stephen Graham's wife is in Adolescence and it's not their first show together (2025)

The pair have appeared on multiple shows and films over their acting careers

Award-winning British actor Stephen Graham has been sharing the screen with his wife over his decades-long career, most recently appearing together in Netflix's hit new drama Adolescence.

Adolescence, which also stars Ashley Walters, is about 13-year-old Jamie who gets arrested on suspicion of murdering his classmate. It was released to Netflix on March 13, and it has already received widespread critical acclaim for its powerful message and incredible acting.

The new drama has received a whopping 98 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes and is sitting in the number one spot on Netflix. For leading actor Owen Cooper, who played Jamie, it was his first time ever on a set.

It has also been praised due to its unique filming style, as each hour-long episode was filmed in one shot - which Graham has actually done before in BBC's tense drama Boiling Point.

Scouse actor Graham plays accused murderer Jamie's father Eddie Miller and gives an exceptionally moving performance as the viewers see the truth behind the murder unravel in real time.

And the 51-year-old actor actually got to work with his wife Hannah Walters on Adolescence, which he co-wrote with Jack Thorne. Hannah, 48, appeared in episode two as a teacher, Mrs Bailey, who reprimands student Jade after hitting another pupil.

Stephen and Hannah first met as aspiring actors early in their careers. They later married and had two children together – Alfie and Grace.

Their first role together was in This Is England, a film - and later a spin-off series - about a group of skinheads in 1983. Hannah played Trudy, and Stephen played lead role Combo.

Most recently, the pair can be seen together in the Disney Plus series A Thousand Blows. In this series, Hannah plays a female gang member while Stephen portrays a boxer, Sugar Goodson.

Before their collaboration on the BBC drama 'Time', the couple had already shone in the film 'Boiling Point'. Hannah hasn't just made acting cameos, she's also been crucial behind the scenes as a producer on many projects they've worked on together.

The pair set up the production company Matriarch Production in 2020, which is the company behind Boiling Point and its subsequent TV series, A Thousand Blows, music videos including Sam Fender's 'Spit of You' and now Adolescence.

Stephen has also been candid about the significance of his wife's role due to his dyslexia, especially when it comes to learning scripts. At a BAFTA Sessions panel, he revealed: "'I'm dyslexic, so I struggle. My missus actually reads the script and says whether or not I'm doing it. She's made some good choices."

He also shared the effort he puts into preparation: "I have to read it and read it and read it, then make it look like it's the first time I'm saying it."

In 2018, discussing their bond before fame, Stephen said that they were "bezzie mates". He added: "After a while, we just thought, 'This is daft.' Do you know what I mean? We like each other; we should get together."

During his Desert Island Discs episode in 2019, Stephen also shared more details about how they got together. He revealed Hannah had moved to Spain for a number of years and so they couldn't see each other.

When she returned briefly to England, he asked her out and they went on a date. "We went to see Saving Private Ryan, had a bite to eat in Greenwich and we were at New Cross train station and I said, 'Please don't go to Spain'.

"She asked, 'Why?' and I said 'Well, I love you.' She said she'd been waiting five years for me to say that. And the next day we moved in together. And we've been together ever since."

The couple have made numerous appearances together on red carpets and even joined a celebrity episode of Gogglebox in 2023. Away from working with her husband, Hannah, who began acting in 2006, has had lead roles in projects such as Whitechapel, No Offence and Malpractice.
